All-steel akinakes by Gladush Dmitry
The akinakai from Deve Hüyük are the best examples known to me this kind of dagger designed for combat in an Achaemenid context. They have plain iron hilts with T-pommels and very short blades which probably reached a maximum of only about 9 inches (23cm) before corrosion, sometimes having low mid-ridges. I think they are likely one of the best choices for a middle-class soldier's sidearm. The design would also work for a Western Scythian impression.
I commissioned this reproduction based an akinakes held at the British Museum from Gladush Dmitry, proprietor of Etsy shop Fantasycraft39, based in Kaliningrad, Russia. Gladush will produce the same design for you on request. The blade is heat-treated 60C2 high-carbon steel. If you only want one for display and non-contact reenactment, a lower price is available for a mild steel blade. Gladush and I discussed the requirements at length; he was very accommodating to my feedback on improvements.
It's vital to note at the outset that due to domestic laws in Kaliningrad Oblast, the dagger ships in two pieces, so you either have to be able to peen the tang yourself (or find a friend who has the tools and knowhow), or weld it. I attempted to peen the tang and failed, so I wound up having it finished by a local welding shop, Weld Republic in Newtown (the proprietor, Glenn, is another fellow I had a great time working with, and his rates are surprisingly cheap). Also, the blade cannot be shipped sharp from Kaliningrad, but the edge isn't terribly thick - it's comparable to the factory edge on an Atlanta Cutlery blade - so sharpening it shouldn't be much trouble.
To improve hold on the grip, I wrapped it in 2mm hemp cord according to an instructional by Tony Drake at RAT (RAT account needed to view full-sized photos; go ahead, it's free). This kind of wrapping would likely need to be replaced periodically as it became grimy or worked loose, but it seems tight enough to last several battles and is only a few minutes' work. Lastly, I filled the slight gap between the guard and blade with beeswax-linseed oil to keep water from getting in and rusting inside the hilt. I suspect a more authentic option, if you can get it, would be something along the lines of melted cutler's resin, put into the hilt before the tang is inserted.

You'll note that this first edition arrived with edges on the guard that weren't rounded off, but Gladush says that they can be on future daggers, at no additional cost. Also, while the dimensions of this one are in keeping with historical examples, some buyers may wish for slightly different ones, such as a thicker blade (the British Museum example is only 5mm with the mid-ridge and pretty light, but a few others appear to have been thicker) or a different grip length depending on the size of your hand. Analysis of an unprovenanced akinakes
I've just stumbled across a curious article from last October by Sean Manning of Book and Sword. It concerns the analysis of an iron/steel akinakes purchased "from dealers in Tehran" along with iron Luristan-style blades in the 1960s.
The dagger is a fairly standard design and could fit in with known finds from Achaemenid territory or elsewhere in Asia. What interests me is that the article includes a photo of the top of the pommel, the first I've seen of an iron akinakes, showing a tang with a wide rectangular cross section peened flush. The pommel was apparently a separate piece from the rest of the grip, with the sturdy peened tang holding it firmly in place.
Assuming this is a genuine Iron Age artefact, it is the first evidence I've ever seen for the construction of an iron akinakes hilt, and indicates that the iron akinakes was NOT created in a single piece like the bronze proto-akinakai from Central Asia.

Making an all-metal akinakes, part I
One thing I've long been unsatisfied with is the fact that all my attempts at making akinakai have had to have wood hilts. Archaeologists have found a few blades with hidden-type tangs that might have comprised organic-hilted akinakai, but most of the finds I've read about from confirmed Achaemenid sites (Persepolis and Deve Hüyük, mostly) have solid iron hilts. This is in keeping with the fact that the akinakes seems to have developed since the late Bronze Age as a one-piece casting with perhaps only a cord or leather thong wound about the grip. In the Iron Age, akinakes hilts would have most probably have been likewise forged in one piece. One or two finds from Persepolis are grooved in such a way as to suggest that the hilts were folded around the tangs from a thin bar, while another is an iron knife with what appears to be the bottom half of an akinakes hilt made of bronze, with a groove completely bisecting the guard. Metal has the advantage of being less delicate than wood and so the hilt can be less bulky.
Now, hot-forging anything more complex than a tanged leaf arrowhead is well beyond my skill. However, as last year's Elamite dagger project shows, shaping with a cheap angle grinder requires very little skill, and I happen to have access to a drill press at the moment. With care, it may be possible to fabricate a slab-tanged akinakes that looks passably like a proper one. Since the grip will be wrapped with leather, the use of a slab tang should be less obvious.

Right. As before, the blade and hilt are sketched onto normal paper, folded and cut, then glued onto cardstock and cut again. I did these while still planning another wood hilt, so they are not quite as according to the current plan. I cut off the pommel section of the hilt tracing, then traced the rest onto a scrap piece of 1/8-inch steel, and added a straight line so as to first bisect the piece so each scale can be cut out and shaped without damaging the other. The pommel will be made from 1/2-inch bar stock. The blade will be from the leftover 1/4x1-1/2-inch bar from last year's Elamite dagger.
Next I glued the hilt pattern to the blade, using the folding lines and the bar itself to ensure proper alignment (as you may have noticed, the hidden tang on the original blade pattern was crooked).
It would be ideal to use a large plate so that the guard can have a corresponding full profile on the blade, but this is what I have to work with, so the sides will have to be filled with extra steel bits traced from the severed wings. A slight gap will probably remain since this bar stock thins down a bit toward the edges. Perhaps adding lots of solder will help.
The tang will be much narrower where it passes through the pommel. This same method was used on the Naue type II of LBA Southern Europe and while it's not accurate here, it should mean the pommel has to be filed out a lot less.
This next step ought to have been done earlier but it's not a loss yet. I punched a couple holes in the pattern with a hobby awl to mark the rivet holes and widened them with a thin file.
That's all the work I'm doing for today. The holes need not line up precisely, since they'll be filed wider to fit the pins - as long as a thin round file can pass through, that should be sufficient.

Making an Elamite dagger, part V
Since one grip scale bowed outward a little (probably due to unevenness of the tang rather than the scale itself) I pressed it into place with epoxy and weights, using one pin to ensure it was sitting in the correct position.
I cut up the pins with the angle grinder and gently rounded off the ends to prevent raggedness when peened. They should protrude above the scales just a few millimeters on both ends. If you cut them too long, you can grind them down a bit; obviously, if they're even a little too short, you have to start over.
Any old block of metal can serve as an anvil for setting the pins. Hammer them down until they're flush with the scales. The hammer does unfortunately leave discolored marks on the wood which need to be sanded off and a final coat of linseed oil applied.
Here you can see that the scales were a bit too short to cover the triangular ricasso.
With handling, the slick appearance and stickiness imparted by the linseed oil will dry up. The dagger is far more comfortable to hold with the scales in place. The leaf shape gives it plenty of blade presence; it feels like a chopping blade despite being little more than a foot overall.

Making an Elamite dagger, part IV
I rough-cut the grip scales on a band saw months ago out of a 1/4-inch maple plank from Lowe's. A more historical material would probably be Eurasian walnut (Juglans regia, aka Persian, English, European, Circassian or common walnut). Unfortunately the American black walnut planks I had on hand no more closely resemble Eurasian walnut than maple does. The maple was the remnant from the same plank I cut the scales for my
letter opener from back in 2015. I sorted through the selection at
Lowe's to get one with the most visible curl.
After much dawdling and working on other projects, today I finally sanded them down to the correct shape. The most tedious part of the process is channeling out the undersides of the scales to fit into the flanges, and I failed to get a perfect fit.
To the right are some common nails annealed by gas torch, which, when cut up, will serve as substitutes for the iron pins on the original. I think I'll be able to get two pins out of one nail, but we'll see.
While a light brown stain might have popped the grain more and given it a slightly closer resemblance to walnut, I am awfully fond of the look of pale wood on dark grey steel (similar to the bone scales that were prevalent on similar swords in the late Bronze and early Iron ages), so instead I'm going straight to the linseed oil finish. Sufficient coats of linseed will turn pale wood golden yellow, a color similar to antique bone.

Potential problems with wooden scabbard construction
Since I usually recommend making scabbards from wood if you have the skill and tools to do so, I feel compelled to share some information from a recent conversation I had over at SFI.
I brought up a personal project of mine where a wooden scabbard seemed to be causing rust on a sword blade. Jeff Ellis identified a likely cause being that I may have used Titebond II or III wood glues, which have a reputation for making steel rust. He recommended Titebond Original as well as Elmer's wood glue and, in fact, Elmer's white (all-purpose).
Another possibility we discussed was the use of linseed oil to seal the bare wood. Thinking back, it makes sense that gluing a wooden scabbard together and then giving it a moisture-resistant finish (including such things as drying oil, paint and paste wax) could easily result in moisture being trapped inside if it isn't allowed to dry for a good long time.
As a final note, it's well-known that the tannic acid in oak can corrode steel, so it should be avoided in scabbards and hilts. (I have not made this mistake myself, but it is worth mentioning.)

Making an Elamite dagger, part III
After multiple sessions of cold-forging and polishing, the blade is finished. I tried to anneal the edges of the tang with a flame weeder, and I do think it helped. As you can see, I didn't manage to polish out the last of the grind marks.
The flange is quite shallow, maybe a millimeter and a half at the most. But I think even one this shallow will serve its purpose. A higher, thinner flange could, as I understand it, be crimped a bit into the scales to provide much better hold on them.
Some of the equipment for raising a flange. For me, both hammers proved necessary: The cross-peen hammer's narrow face gets into concave curves that the claw hammer is useless against, but the cross-peen hammer's round face has nasty concentric circles that transfer onto the medium, so the claw hammer's smooth face is necessary for all straight and convex edges. Another useful tool is a table clamp for holding the blade while hammering on the top of the pommel area, since bracing the blade's thin point against anything would risk damaging it.
I finished up with the usual combination of various grades of sandpaper ending with the Dremel's carbon steel brush. The initial sanding also included a round file about 1/4 inch thick for roughing out the narrowest curves.

Making an Elamite dagger, part II
Couple of weeks ago, I went to town with the angle grinder's flap disk. In about an hour and a half, I removed a third of the tang thickness and completed the primary bevels.
I also did a quick polish to round off the now-sharp edges and highlight remaining problem areas.
Getting the tang down to an even thickness is proving difficult. A nice surprise was how easily the little chevron shape on the guard formed as a result of adding the bevels, but unfortunately, I don't think the scales I selected are long enough to cover it, so it might wind up as a very small ricasso. Although it has practically no distal taper before the point, the blade now feels light and sword-like, balancing about an inch in front of the guard, which will likely move even farther back when the scales are added.
What didn't go so well? The flap disk does the job fast, but it left behind many deep grind marks which will be difficult to polish out. The flap disk also seemed to produce a slight hollow grind on one side of the centerline. And keeping the centerline from wandering was pretty difficult...
... which resulted in this, the blade becoming too thin below the shoulders, where I tried too many times to correct it. A well-made sword blade should be at its very thickest at this point. Hopefully, the original grinding wheel can get rid of the flap disk's grind marks and reduce some of the uneven thickness a little more slowly.
With the edges safely rounded, I could feel and sorta see that where the blade should be at its widest, the edges are faintly convex. As well, I learned from my belt knife project that the flanges don't require that much extra material, so I should make the tang narrower by perhaps a sixteenth of an inch.
I've halted work for several weeks, because I have other things to do and the weather in Bucks County's been cold and rainy (grinding is too noisy and produces too many steel filings to work indoors). I intend to pick up again a week from Sunday, after my woodworking class ends, hopefully correcting all the above issues.

Making an Elamite dagger and scabbard, part I
Between the Egyptian statue of Darius the Great and the find from Deve Hüyük, I now believe a recreation of the so-called Elamite dagger is entirely plausible as well as not too expensive - and that's just what I'm doing!
This will be a slow and laborious process and could take the better part of a year. I'm also bogged down with trying to get as much woodworking done as possible right now that necessitates shop equipment, since I probably won't be taking any classes next semester.
This project owes much to the work of Matthew Amt, who two years ago demonstrated that an iron Naue II could be created from mild steel using only an angle grinder and hand tools, as opposed to the more expensive bench grinders and belt sanders normally used in making blades by stock removal. If you have boundless stamina, I expect you could do the same with just a hacksaw and files. Again, this is something I lack, so power tools will be necessary.
The project starts with a paper pattern. I first scaled the image from Halehs World of Archaeology on my computer (according to Roger Moorey's catalogue, the blade, including tang, is 31.9cm long). I made a rough tracing of the hilt, folded it in half lengthwise and made a nice smooth outline, then added about an eighth of an inch as the raw material for cold-hammered flanges (this is also acting on Matt's advice). The blade was done separately. Since the original is badly distorted from damage and/or corrosion, I just sketched the blade from measurements, and added about half an inch to account for damage to the original's point. It may be a slightly different shape from however the original was shaped; I don't mind. I know from photos that it is within the range of shape of well-preserved bronze originals.
Once the paper patterns were cut out, I glued them onto card stock using a gluestick and cut them out again. I also twirled out the rivet holes with the angled blade of an X-Acto.
Next, the pattern is mounted onto some mild steel bar stock with mounting putty, and traced in permanent marker. This is 1/4x1.5x36-inch stock, which should provide plenty of material for both this and a new akinakes blade when I get around to it. I have no idea of the alloy; as a rule, though, chain hardware stores in the U.S. don't carry high-carbon or stainless steel in bar stock form. No heat treatment will be assumed; ideally, I'll just hammer-harden the edges.
En suite with the angle grinder, of course, goes my trusty splash goggles and a pair of leather gloves. I have no protective apron, so I'm just trying to stand and hold the grinder to avoid most of the sparks. And there are sparks, not as much as with high-carbon steel, but definitely more than I'm comfortable having rain onto my trousers. I have to work outdoors, and after the initial cuts I realized ear plugs are necessary.
Above, the outline is maybe two-thirds done over three roughly 45-minute sessions, mostly using the grinding disk that came with the machine, with, of course, the larger chunks removed with a standard cut-off wheel. Using the angle grinder is easier but more tedious than I anticipated; it's like gradually erasing metal. Between sessions, I've been smoothing out the edges and getting rid of the ragged fringes with a file to make handling the blank safer.
I drilled the holes for the tang with one of my school's drill presses (using my own drill bits, of course - I don't like the thought of being yelled at for using woodshop equipment on metal) and cleaned them up with a Dremel cone cutter.
One interesting result that I've noticed so far is that assuming I understand Moorey's measurements, the hilt is tiny, and far too short to function the way I thought it would. I thought that all five fingers would rest between the pommel and guard, like on a modern qama (which this little sword greatly resembles), with the thumb and forefinger occupying the finger notches. Instead, the thumb and forefinger can only simultaneously pinch the notches if the pommel is completely within the fingers, resting against the heel of the hand and between the little and ring fingers. If I choke up on it so that the pommel's outside my fingers and lower on the heel, my thumb and forefinger are now pinching the guard, with my middle finger in one of the notches. Perhaps corroborating the latter usage is the fact that on several other daggers of this type, the sides of the guard are concave.
Meanwhile, the card pattern can also be used for preparing the scabbard parts. Possibly the original was made of just two pieces of wood, but because this would require a lot of material removal and leave the wide side of the throat a bit weaker than ideal due to its grain being shorter than the throat is wide, I'm making it instead from multiple pieces of 1/4-inch poplar (aka American tulipwood).
I chose poplar because what with the sharp angles, I don't think these scabbards had an organic facing, which would either have to be made in multiple pieces (and perhaps stitched?) or get scrunched around corners. For a simple scabbard which will be faced, basswood is acceptable, but it (or at least the kind we get in the States) strikes me as too soft and weak for a bare wood scabbard. Harder woods may be more durable, but are also more expensive and difficult to work. Poplar provides a nice balance of physical qualities. It belongs to a different species - a whole different order, in fact - from the poplars of Eurasia, and its color is usually unattractive (though can be quite beautiful), but I plan to paint it, so I don't think the species matters so much, since neither its color nor grain will be viisble.
Alongside them, I cut a pair of curly maple scales. I later got some black walnut, which would possibly be a little more appropriate (it's not the right species, but walnut grows throughout Iran while maple grows only in the north) but I'd already cut the maple by then. Oh well, at least the curly pattern is nice.

I made a rough tracing of the hilt, folded it in half lengthwise and made a nice smooth outline, then added about an eighth of an inch as the raw material for cold-hammered flanges (this is also acting on Matt's advice). The blade was done separately. Since the original is badly distorted from damage and/or corrosion, I just sketched the blade from measurements, and added about half an inch to account for damage to the original's point. It may be a slightly different shape from however the original was shaped; I don't mind. I know from photos that it is within the range of shape of well-preserved bronze originals.
Once the paper patterns were cut out, I glued them onto card stock using a gluestick and cut them out again. I also twirled out the rivet holes with the angled blade of an X-Acto.
Next, the pattern is mounted onto some mild steel bar stock with mounting putty, and traced in permanent marker. This is 1/4x1.5x36-inch stock, which should provide plenty of material for both this and a new akinakes blade when I get around to it. I have no idea of the alloy; as a rule, though, chain hardware stores in the U.S. don't carry high-carbon or stainless steel in bar stock form. No heat treatment will be assumed; ideally, I'll just hammer-harden the edges.
En suite with the angle grinder, of course, goes my trusty splash goggles and a pair of leather gloves. I have no protective apron, so I'm just trying to stand and hold the grinder to avoid most of the sparks. And there are sparks, not as much as with high-carbon steel, but definitely more than I'm comfortable having rain onto my trousers. I have to work outdoors, and after the initial cuts I realized ear plugs are necessary.
Above, the outline is maybe two-thirds done over three roughly 45-minute sessions, mostly using the grinding disk that came with the machine, with, of course, the larger chunks removed with a standard cut-off wheel. Using the angle grinder is easier but more tedious than I anticipated; it's like gradually erasing metal. Between sessions, I've been smoothing out the edges and getting rid of the ragged fringes with a file to make handling the blank safer.
I drilled the holes for the tang with one of my school's drill presses (using my own drill bits, of course - I don't like the thought of being yelled at for using woodshop equipment on metal) and cleaned them up with a Dremel cone cutter.
One interesting result that I've noticed so far is that assuming I understand Moorey's measurements, the hilt is tiny, and far too short to function the way I thought it would. I thought that all five fingers would rest between the pommel and guard, like on a modern qama (which this little sword greatly resembles), with the thumb and forefinger occupying the finger notches. Instead, the thumb and forefinger can only simultaneously pinch the notches if the pommel is completely within the fingers, resting against the heel of the hand and between the little and ring fingers. If I choke up on it so that the pommel's outside my fingers and lower on the heel, my thumb and forefinger are now pinching the guard, with my middle finger in one of the notches. Perhaps corroborating the latter usage is the fact that on several other daggers of this type, the sides of the guard are concave.
Meanwhile, the card pattern can also be used for preparing the scabbard parts. Possibly the original was made of just two pieces of wood, but because this would require a lot of material removal and leave the wide side of the throat a bit weaker than ideal due to its grain being shorter than the throat is wide, I'm making it instead from multiple pieces of 1/4-inch poplar (aka American tulipwood).
I chose poplar because what with the sharp angles, I don't think these scabbards had an organic facing, which would either have to be made in multiple pieces (and perhaps stitched?) or get scrunched around corners. For a simple scabbard which will be faced, basswood is acceptable, but it (or at least the kind we get in the States) strikes me as too soft and weak for a bare wood scabbard. Harder woods may be more durable, but are also more expensive and difficult to work. Poplar provides a nice balance of physical qualities. It belongs to a different species - a whole different order, in fact - from the poplars of Eurasia, and its color is usually unattractive (though can be quite beautiful), but I plan to paint it, so I don't think the species matters so much, since neither its color nor grain will be viisble.
Alongside them, I cut a pair of curly maple scales. I later got some black walnut, which would possibly be a little more appropriate (it's not the right species, but walnut grows throughout Iran while maple grows only in the north) but I'd already cut the maple by then. Oh well, at least the curly pattern is nice.

Deve Hüyük - the full catalogue
Following Friday's post, I found Roger Moorey's catalogue of finds. It was embarrassingly easy and I don't know why my earlier searches didn't turn it up, but here goes anyway. Although most of what's shown is in the form of line drawings, it's still a rich gallery of objects common to our time period.
An important note on time periods: The site as a whole comprises several phases. Deve Hüyük I seems to be Neo-Assyrian, while Deve Hüyük II is Achaemenid. There's also a few Arsacid-period graves in phase II; these are termed Deve Hüyük III. Therefore if you're interested in any particular object, you need to confirm which phase it belongs to.
Moorey states, on the basis of the long sword and hilt fragments from Persepolis (see OIP #69), that the flanged dagger was used throughout the Achaemenid period. He also lends some credence to something I've long suspected, that this dagger is the same as the "Elamite" dagger worn by robe-clad Persians and Elamites in period art.
There's a lot of highly decorated pottery, including several "flasks" shaped like pointed amphorae but without handles. A canteen broadly similar to the ones from Persepolis but slightly different in detail is here described as a "pilgrim flask," while another, highly decorated glazed one is considered to be of Egyptian influence.
Those looking to add more flare to high-class impressions may look to the variety of bronze bracelets, anklets, rings and earrings, many of which should be simple to fabricate from metal rod or strips with annealing and filing. Beads of all sorts of materials appear, as well as small, ceramic human head and animal pendants.
Among toiletries are a pair of tweezers, several circular bronze mirrors, and tubes and applicator sticks for kohl, a kind of eyeliner. The kohl tubes and sticks are not necessarily feminine accessories, as Xenophon claims that Astyages, like other Median men, wore "pencillings beneath his eyes." (Some of the attached codes may clarify this but I'm only skimming for the time being.)
Achaemenid bronze bowls, rhytons, iron akinakai, sagarides, arrowheads, tanged javelin heads, a second gorytos cover decoration, snaffle bits, arm fibulae and cylinder seals mostly reinforce what we already know. One socketed trilobate arrowhead is attached to a bronze chain for some reason, and most of the spearheads run to proportionally rather narrow, though they may have corroded at the edges. There's also a bronze bell described as a horse fitting.

Making a wooden akinakes scabbard, part V and last
Here you go:
The scabbard is finished with paints, in imitation of hide glue paints which we know were used on brain-tanned leather in more recent times.
My cast bronze chape from last semester is held in place with a pair of wooden pegs which pass through the front board of the scabbard and are glued down. (Since none of the chapes I've seen which feature holes for these pegs have metal rivets or nails in place, I assume the pegs were organic.)
Lastly, a braided cord (cotton, unfortunately, but it's all I could find - and it is a period material, though preferably for high-status impressions) is tied tightly around the scabbard, with its knot in the back. Both ends of the cord are sewn and tied off to prevent fraying, but on the long end, this step should be deferred until the cord is cut to its final length. A little experimentation is needed to find the right length so the long end can pass comfortably around the thigh but not hang much below your knee or allow the scabbard to swing wildly when you run. The short end is waxed so that it can compress enough to pass through the fluted brass bead and be knotted on the other side.

Making a wooden akinakes scabbard, part IV
Akinakes scabbards were sometimes covered in embossed sheet metal, but judging from the number of bronze chapes presented in isolation in museum collections, I would have to think that scabbards were more often completely organic apart from the chape. So here I am covering my scabbard in leather. Fabric or thin rawhide would probably be equally acceptable.
As with the Medgidia-type scabbard, I laid the cut leather down with a thin brushing of contact cement (hide glue would probably work about as well, and be more authentic), trimming away the excess as I stitched.
Upon reaching the end of the seam, it's reversed and turned into a cross stitch.
At the other end, the shape of the expanded throat seems to make it likely that the leather there could peel off eventually (maybe that's why the top of the throat sometimes sloped back toward the middle?). In this instance I drilled a very small hole through the core and put the thread through it, lashing the leather down in the process.
With that done, I made a cross cut through the leather where the belt loop is to be tied. The cut in the leather can be cleaned up by putting a drop of glue into the hole and using a pencil or something to squash the corners down.

An akinakes chape from Bucks County
A side benefit of taking foundry at BCCC is being able to do a small personal project even in my first semester.
The positive is composed of Victory Brown sculpting wax in sheets pressed around the end of my wooden scabbard core, with additional lumps acting as filler. The whole is scraped and rubbed smooth; detail is then applied by rolling tiny pieces of wax and squashing them onto the surface.
Gating was indirect and complicated. I attached one vent to the inside of the front because I didn't want to mess up the design on the outside.
Dipping, firing and pouring proceeded smoothly. Divestment was a bit delicate, however, for obvious reasons.
About eight pounds of bronze were poured to make a casting of less than two ounces. I had to tediously wear off all the stubs with carbide-edged die grinder attachments.
It was during the fitting process that I began to regret having put a gate on the inside. In the end I even sanded down the scabbard core a little in desperation - a loose fit will be necessary because the scabbard is to be covered in leather. Since these chapes are usually found with the holes at the top empty, I speculate that they were held in place with organic pins, probably wood.
Divesting had to be continued on the inside entirely through sandblasting so as not to deform the walls with hammer blows.
The finished chape, after sanding with 400- and 1500-grit paper and burnishing with a steel wire Dremel brush. I intend to create a permanent rubber mold from it before applying a finish of clear wax and attaching it to the scabbard.

Making a Medgidia-type scabbard, part II & last
The leather facing is glued down with a thin brushing of contact cement and then sewn tightly around the core with a double-running stitch. A little excess width is necessary for leverage when pinching the leather to the core; essentially, you need more than you need. The smooth fit is possible because of the leather's slight stretch, although I expect it to be a double-edged sword, as the angular corner of the tab may cause the leather to wear out there.
I made small crosshair cuts in the leather over the tab hole and tried to glue it down there. It didn't take as well as I would've liked, but it just about works.

Making a Medgidia-type scabbard, part I
I've noted before that the classic Achaemenid akinakes scabbard with its expanded throat is very tedious to make out of wood, requiring two thick planks, most of which must be carved away to leave behind the large, hollow shells. Getting a chape is also proving very difficult.
As an alternative, for those with less time, I present this scabbard based loosely on the one from Medgidia, Romania. It's of questionable origin; it could be Achaemenid, Scythian or native Thracian manufacture, and pending further evidence, I'd consider it acceptable for any of the above. It lacks an expanded throat or chape, and is thus much faster to make from thinner planks. It's incomplete, but I intend to further simplify it by facing it in leather rather than bronze - leather-covered wood scabbards are often cited in literature on the Scythians, and I maintain that bronze and bone chapes found in isolation are further evidence for scabbards that were otherwise entirely perishable. The original also has embossed decoration, which I intend to replicate with paint.
The wood core is mainly two pieces cut from a 1/4-inch poplar plank. It does require a bit of carving and sanding. Luckily I still have access to Bucks' band saws and belt sanders to make the business quicker. I carved this in the span of four days.
I cut a 1/8-inch mortise between the two halves of the small subsection of the belt tab where the lanyard hole was to be drilled, and added a scrap bit of basswood with its grain perpendicular to that of the tab. With any luck, the plywood effect should make this less of a weak point.
The original has no lanyard hole visible from the front, and I don't know what kind of suspension it used; perhaps there's a ring at the back of the tab, or maybe it was attached directly to the belt somehow.
After taking it to the belt sander a second time, I found I'd accidentally worn through and now the scabbard was partly open down one side. Caution must be exercised with the really powerful tools... Luckily it was still wider than the blade, so I glued on a thin basswood strip before continuing with the carving and sanding.

Making a wooden akinakes scabbard, part III
Next up is finishing the tab. Drilling a large enough hole for the attachment is simple enough. But since the little ear where the suspension is actually attached looks like a weak point to me, and furthermore pine is a rather weak wood to begin with, I'm trying to reinforce it, using sheet brass and epoxy. I don't know of any evidence for this sort of feature; probably the originals were made of a stronger wood. But it'll be covered with something (probably leather).
The chape is proving problematic. The originals were most commonly made of bronze and sometimes bone. Since I can't cast bronze yet and am having trouble finding a useable lump of bone (it should probably be made of the knuckle end of a cow, sheep or goat leg bone) here I'm using wood as a stopgap measure. Wood is only this side of allowable on the precedent of the scabbard from Egypt, and it should be replaced presently.
Again it's the very common goat motif, though others are sometimes attested. Unfortunately, what I thought was maple has turned out to be something quite a bit softer and more open-grained, also of less uniform hardness, so this carving is cruder than I'd like. I'll probably attach it with rubber cement so it can be easily pulled off when the time comes. A good friction fit will do most of the job, but a little adhesive is necessary, as I learned by nearly losing my pewter chape in the sand at Marathon 2011.

Just to pass the time
Since I'm at a standstill on my new akinakes scabbard until I can figure out whether to cover it in leather, parchment or linen, I redid the hilt yet again.
The new grip is made from a one-inch dowel of some very pale, soft and lightweight wood, probably poplar, which is almost certainly not a great choice but was all I had on hand. If it breaks, I can always go back to the old one. It's finished with linseed oil. And yes, it is slightly askew.
It occurs to me that Persian (aka English) walnut would be a good material for small carvings like this.
The pommel and guard are the same scrap maple ones it's had from the beginning, with a modern polyurethane sealer. The grip and guard are based on those seen at Persepolis (check out the last picture on this page). The pyramidal pattern is actually very easy to make with a straight chisel blade on your art knife once all the long grooves have been filed.
Since the akinakes guards are always hidden inside the scabbard throats, I copied the rimmed edge of the guard from one seen on the golden-hilted iron sword here. It's probably Scythian, but the grip and overall shape are not unlike Achaemenid examples.
The securing nut is also further ground down and partially sunken. It's still rather protrusive, but no longer resembles a nut so much as a small, shapeless lump.

Various personal business forced me to postpone further work until Monday, but work's progressed quickly since then. The core is essentially complete. I won't boother with photos of the front shell in progress because it's exactly the same process as the back shell.
It's still somewhat too thick in several places, most obviously the lower body, considering how thin the blades are. I may do a little further sanding, though the very hard knot you see near the lower end has made reducing by hand evenly pretty difficult.
Although the amount of wood removed on the inside wasn't much, it still fit the blades too loosely, so I glued down a strip of felt to make it more snug before gluing the shells together - a solution cribbed from European swordmakers (though sheep and goat hide are said to be preferable, as a pointed blade could eventually catch in the felt, tear it loose and shove it down the inside, where it would be difficult or impossible to remove - quite an awful scenario). If the fit is correct, you can hold the scabbard upside-down without the sword falling out, yet still draw it easily.
